Missing Fall

I vowed to get better with the blog but alas it's been almost 2 months. I miss fall for it's my absolute favorite time of year. The leaves changing, the colors and the crisp air. I love winter too and nothing beats sleeping with the windows wide open while snuggling under the down. I truly hate the heat so living in Florida isn't exactly meshing with my internal temperature gage. The mornings have been cool which is nice but it's still not "home" to me. I am however very excited that the Empress and I are heading to NY for a long weekend in less than a month. We're going to visit mom-mom, our family and friends and hoping for that perfect brisk weather I miss so much. I'm planning to pack light so I can haul my camera gear and snap away at the luscious colors. Til then

When I showed the Empress the following picture taken at today's sonogram, she declared "the baby has my nose". Perhaps a little Chinese fairy snuck in. I told her, baby sure did! A beautiful little button nose. Little Bit is growing and doing great at 19 weeks and weighs 11 ounces with a heart rate of 145.

Three and a half years ago I posted about my referral and pending adoption of Emme Li Chao. Three and a half years later I am awaiting the birth of a baby who was definitely a surprise! Just two months after our wedding, one month after our relocation to Florida... I am 18 weeks along and trying to soak it all in. Emme is excited about becoming a big sister and I look forward to seeing her continue to flourish as my first "baby". I know the gender but the man in the house does not. We are a family divided! All I really care is that the baby is healthy. Dressing room photos aren't the most flattering but it's something. Me at 15 weeks while visiting in NYC.

One of the best days of my life by far. Low stress and we just enjoyed everything and everyone. It was truly a family centered day. We never intended to have a big wedding but rather a destination wedding for three. When 3 of our parents took seriously ill, later compounded by relocating, our priorities changed. We wanted to celebrate life and love and leave NY in style surrounded by the people we love the most. Planned in just 4 months; every vendor, every guest, every detail was easy and more amazing that I could have imagined. Nearly 100 people came from as far as 3000 miles away to share our day. Pics taken by friends who play such a pivotal role in both our daily lives and this day. The the map cake was a surprise for my husband who is a road travel kind of guy. Every state (14) we've traveled to was marked with a heart, a replica of our house in Florida and all the amazing memories we've shared the past 4 years. More to follow when proofs come in.

The Absent blogger

A few months too late but felt I should do a catch-up post. Lots of changes and things going on in the past several months; some good, some bad and others very exciting. The most devastating was my mom's stage 4 cancer diagnosis in August. While not much hope was originally felt, she has had a really good response to treatment. After 6 killer chemo doses, she is on the verge on stepping down to a less aggressive treatment. We had a mega scare with her in December but she is slowly bouncing back. The love and support has been felt.

I really delved into self-employment which has many ups and downs. It's been great having more mommy time and exhausting at the same time. I've had to give up the luxury of having weekly breaks from my mom but it's taught me a lot about mothering from both the view of the child and the mother.

Onto happier news, MP (man person) and I are getting married in 3 weeks. What was originally planned to be a romantic elopement of sorts is now a full-on wedding for 100 in a historical mansion here in NY. It's hard to believe at 40 I will be a first time bride but I couldn't be happier. It's both the end and the beginning of different journeys for us all. The actual wedding planning began as a way of celebrating with our parents; 3 of whom have been ill this year; the latter being MP's parents. All we can hope for is improved health for all of them.

Shortly after the wedding, we will be leaving NY. This decision far exceeds any fears of marriage. I'm leaving the only "home" I've ever known, my village and my friends who are some of the most amazing people in the world. So in the midst of tulle and bows, petals and candles we are planting our roots in Florida where we are building our dream house.

Somehow along the way, blogging just got lost in the shuffle but what's a post without some photos. The following were taken by Sarah Cornish from My 4 Hens Photography for our first family shoot in November.

We headed to go see Emme's "papa and GG" in New Jersey and they had a great day in store for the Empress. We went to a lovely orchard and Em had her face painted (rainbow princess was her request), went on a tractor driven hay ride to the patch and chose the perfect pumpkin to be carved by her Papa. She drew the face and the carving commenced. Having a ride on "Fudge" the pony was a special treat. We raked leaves, jumped in them and had fun playing ball in the backyard before dinner.

I will go back to play catch up later but here's a little story to tell you how I got here. In August my mom was unexpectedly diagnosed with lung cancer. We're not focused on the stage but on the treatment which we hope will work but the reality is, it's not good. In my quest to find a way to let her know there was hope I started thinking of a trinket I might get that would give her a lift . I stumbled upon a jewelry designer's website, placed an order and the rest is history. 2 weeks later my mom hasn't taken off her "while I breathe, I hope" necklace and I am not selling Tina's designs because I believe in them. I only learned today of how that particular motto came to be but it is awe inspiring to say the least. Mom's pendent arrived before it's scheduled delivery just one day before the first round of chemo. It's beautiful, handmade and perfect. It's not cancer specific but inspiring. Whether an ill child, a pending divorce, a chemo patient, your first marathon, etc it will bring hope and inspiration.

This began a chat with the owner, a former social worker turned jewelry designer. Suffice to say I am now selling her work. Why? Why not? I like things which inspire me, inspire others and are unique. I won't be quitting my day job but I like to stand behind things I believe in and of course if I make a few bucks, even better. I won't torture anyone with requests to come a party and wear your underwear on your head to win a free straw or make you feel pressured to make a purchase but I want to share the excitement and enjoyment. I'll be sending out a FB blast so if you see this twice, lucky you.

Check out the site and if there is something you like, want to buy, a gift, etc let's talk. I want this to be meaningful so 10% of all sales as a result of this blog post and my FB blast will result in a donation to St. Jude Children's Hospital. I'm passionate about children and St. Jude is one of those places I donate to every year just because. 40 years ago, my mom was getting ready to welcome me into the world. She's never missed a beat in all that time. I hope I never miss a minute of Emme's. In some families, being raised by a single parent is a hardship and is others a blessing. I know whatever I learned, I learned close to home and can only hope to be as good a parent as she is to me. Turning 40 is my badge of courage. Similar to my Twenty-Ten post, I've accomplished so much these past 10 years that I really am celebrating me and the people who have contributed to my success. Together these strengths and weaknesses brought me to take a leap of faith into the arms of a Chinese baby needing a mommy to love her forever. From bad, comes good and from good comes great. At 40, I am enjoying life as mommy to a feisty four-year old. I don't know all the answers but I know the journey just continues from here

We had a lazy weekend. Didn't do much of anything and I believe pajamas was what I wore all weekend but that didn't stop Em from making an entrance. You don't have to ask her twice if she wants matzoh ball soup. She carefully selected her new rainbow dress, her silver sandals and donned one of her colorful hats. With sunglasses to add the finishing touch, she emerged ready to take her dogs (stuffed) in a stroller walk to the local kosher deli. As the story is retold to me, she made it as far as the mailbox before proclaiming pushing the dogs was hard work and she was ready to go over in the car. Only a real gentleman would oblige this lovely young lady who was breaking in new shoes.

Twinkie is Emme's favorite dog. I only learned a few months ago HE was a SHE. Twinkie is worn for she goes everywhere. I recently bought a backup but gave it to her. We now have Twinkie and Princess the lab twins. Last Friday night Emme proclaimed it was Twinkie's birthday and we needed to have a party. Oh the pressure! On Saturday morning we gathered all the guests, provided refreshments, a card and party hat for the guest of honor. Needless to say a good time was had by all.

This week it was Puppy's birthday and today was Baby Dog's birthday (aka baby Pluto). I just think someone likes cupcakes!

One of the reasons I've been somewhat negligent in maintaining this blog is the time I've been spending commuting which I've never had to do. The other reasons is my camera. I am nearing the end of the photography class I began in March and what a wonderful journey it has been. After waiting over a year to get in, I had the absolute privilege of being one of Karen Russell's students. I've learned a lot, particularly I have stopped shooting in automatic and am now a manual girl. I still prefer shooting aperture priority but I keep practicing. Becoming a mother made me want to take a lot of photos since when the day came and she asked I wanted to ensure I had many captures of our life since there were none from her first 15 months. This spiraled into a real hobby, the purchase of my first DSLR, an arsenal of lenses, books, NAPP membership and lots of goodies. I'm far from professional but my images have come a long way. I like natural light through I struggle with indoor shots. This time of year is great so I can practice a lot outdoors though my main subject is less than cooperative. I do prefer lifestyle photography but am less equipped to shoot subjects on the move. I do love it and hope to continue to grow. Some of my favorite shots.

My blog has been severely neglected. It's hard to keep up with life sometimes but we're back in action. Empress Emme is wonderful and is enjoying being four. She discovered princesses 2 weeks ago and has been sporting a tiara and heels at every opportunity. Her favorite is Cinderella and I am waiting for the right opportunity to give her the hidden blue dress and princess shoes which are hiding in my closet. My hope is just catch her doing something so sweet and so nice that I just have to give her a little treat. We'll see if I can hold out until family day on 6/20. It's hard to believe in just a few short weeks, we will celebrate two years together as mother and daughter. Emme is registered for full day universal pre-k for September and will attend with one of her "besties" which I think will help them both adjust more easily. I'm so grateful to her parents (both teachers) who found the school and gave their stamp of approval. Despite the girl drama they sometimes create with one another, I know they'd be sad to be without each other. I'm hoping A and I will have some fun with them shopping for big girl school supplies in the fall.

Emme, mom-mom and I are going on a 9-night cruise next month and can't wait! I am hoping it will be restful for me and an opportunity to spend much fun in the sun for us all.

My dear friend "L" needs your help. She and her husband were LID 5/2006 (China). She later divorced and CCAA approved her to continue her adoption as a single parent since she was logged in prior to the May 2007 rule change. Other than being single, she meets all the requirements, even today. She has a career, a home and a lot of love to offer a child who waits for a family. At less than 60 days from referral CCAA reversed their decision without a valid reason which contradicts their earlier decision. While we know they have the right to make these decisions, we as an adoption community are outraged knowing this is morally and ethically wrong. If you want to offer your support, please stop by her blog (set up for this purpose), write your local legislators, etc.

Two Years Ago Today

Two years ago today, I received the phone call that would change my life. Maury from FTIA called to tell me she had just received a file from the shared list and thought this was MY girl. She gave me a few tidbits and asked if I wanted to see the file. Unlike my first experience with the shared program I said an enthusiastic YES. I was home sick so got the email quickly. This is what I saw!

I started to cry and tried my mom. I couldn't reach her and called Nic who was teaching. I reached Kris and sent her the file since she's a good friend but also an RN. I had 48 hours to make a decision and submit my LOI and Family Plan. To be continued........

Party Time

Yesterday we attended the third birthday party for one of Emme's favorite friends. The party was a blast and quite the ordeal for such a little girl. Her parents beamed with pride and all our special friends had a great time enjoying the day together. There was an abundance of sweets, a rockin DJ, tons of food, face painting and red velvet cake. Happy Birthday Little D. We love you!

Loves to dance and having marching bands (she distributes the instruments)

Has daily tea parties or at least one home cooked meal for all her animals
Has an incredible sense of humor
Is sleeping through the night, though still co-sleeping
Has strong peer relationships (likes a lot of people but has 3 special friends)

Saturday was Emme's birthday party and today my baby turns FOUR. It's hard to believe that later in the week it will be 2 years since I first saw her face. Time has certainly flown by. Last year she was sick for her birthday and her party and turning three, she was still a bit more shy. She sure wasn't sick for her party but she is sick today and home enjoying the day with mommy and playing with presents from the weekend. As always the generosity of others amazes me. Her party was big and despite the cost and the chance she may not remember it, it was worth it 100%. She had a blast as did her friends. Just about everyone there has a special place in our life and it was wonderful they could be there to help celebrate her special day.

We had the absolute pleasure of seeing special friends today. We haven't seen each other since last summer when Emme had just come home. We were fortunate they were able to stop by on their way home from a special party and had a nice visit. It's a pretty mild day so we took the kids to the playground, not realizing the snow hadn't been cleared. They had fun nonetheless. It was great to see them and the next time will be with the newest addition; their beautiful daughter who is waiting in China. We're hoping they get news tomorrow of their travel dates.

Snarky and Just Plain Opinionated

So there's a top 100 blogs about adoption, infertility and loss. Okay so one of the blogs deserves absolute recognition for the work they do on behalf of special needs kids in China. In fact it was started by moms of these perfect little ones. Some of the others on the list....well it's only MY opinion but, let's just move along. So the real thorn in my side you ask? The brains who created the title for this top list felt it necessary to classify adoption with infertility and loss for what reason? Seriously for many people, adoption is a gift and something to honor, celebrate and smile about. When is the last time you saw someone smiling through a miscarriage or news that they would never conceive children? This truly boggles my mind and pisses me off. Adoption is not or should not be the path of last resort if we truly stand behind the notion that adoption is about finding families for children and not the other way around. I for one chose adoption. I have no idea what my own fertility is like because as a responsible adult I have taken the necessary precautions to ensure that my personal values were preserved to the best of my ability. If I wanted to attempt to pass a watermelon though the birth canal I would have attempted such a feat. Instead I felt like I wanted to provide a forever family to a child who already existed. A true celebration which is now categorized with the horror other families suffer as people like me celebrate. Discuss

The start of a new decade is always fun but this past one has been "my decade". In 2000 I turned 30. In 2000 I quit smoking (cold turkey). I started in 1984. In 2001 I received my bachelors degree and has gastric bypass surgery. In 2003 I received my masters degree with distinction. In 2005 I decided to adopt and began the process to motherhood. I met Robert in 2007 and brought Emme home in 2008. This year I'll be 40. In 10 years, I've earned two degrees, quit a nasty and costly habit, lost 100 pounds, met someone who makes me smile and became a mother. Life is grand.

Last night began the first snowstorm of the season. By 7am we had more than a foot of snow on the ground and Em couldn't wait to look out the window to see. Her grandparents had bought her a beautiful flexible flyer wooden sled for Hanukkah but it was a little too powdery to try it today. I'm hoping tomorrow night we'll go for a ride. Nonetheless we bundled up and braved the cold to clean off the cars and have some fun. Just like her mommy, Em loves to frolic in the snow, throw snow at people and likes some hot cocoa with marshmallows afterward.

This week I did NOT grab a sweatshirt from the laundry pile to wear for morning because that would be gross and a real lady always makes sure she looks her best. I did NOT add a 9 to the salary figure when the recruiter asked what I was making because only a dishonest person would try and make MORE money when they are unemployed. I better go bow my head in shame. When my daughter woke me up Saturday morning I did NOT ask for 10 more minutes, only to find her naked from the waist down in a pile of urine. What kind of mother would do that to a child? Certainly not an almost four year old who still doesn't think the potty is necessary. GADZOOKS what a week it's been.

Weekend Wanderings

We spent this past weekend at Hershey Park and Amish Country. Em enjoyed Hershey's Holiday event though it was quite cold. She went on some rides, did the chocolate tour and picked out a cow to add to her menagerie of animals. Sunday we went on a historic train and Santa even stopped by with a gift. We enjoyed the seasonal lights, music and most of all, Em enjoyed all the animals she saw.

First a haircut at Zippity Doo followed by a mani/pedi at the salon. It was jam packed without a free hand so the owner's husband offered the princess a pedi. He donned his glasses and gave her the works; exfoliation, massage, file, reflexology and polish. While there she snacked on a orange and bottle of water. Even three year olds need pampering every now and then.

It would be an arduous task in the least to list everything I am thankful for but I'll try and summarize it. I am thankful for friends and family who are an active part of my life. I've known for a long time that blood doesn't equal family and friends don't have to be merely that. The people in my life are my family regardless of their origins and for that I am extremely grateful. I am especially grateful for my mom who is my partner in crime, my dutiful assistant and watcher of small child. I couldn't ask for a better grandparent. I am grateful for overall good health despite the fact I've had every bug and critter known to man this year. In the big picture all is well. I am thankful for our amazing doctors who take really good care of us. To say I am grateful for my daughter seems odd so we'll rephrase it. I am both grateful and ever so thankful to my adoption agency, the People's Republic of China, IAAP and special friends, the "T" family in Beijing who made me a parent and gave my daughter a forever family that loves her to the moon and back. Words will never be enough. I am thankful and blessed to have a wonderful man in my life who accepts me unconditionally and loves my daughter almost as much as I do. I am thankful they were open minded enough to welcome each other into their lives. I am also thankful for his family who treats us like we have always been part of them. I am thankful and grateful for my daughter's daycare. The owner and staff take extraordinary care of my daughter and treat her as if she were their own. What more could any parent ask for? We are blessed to be part of yet another family. I am thankful that there are also so many wonderful children and families that we've gotten to know. I am thankful for the new people I've met as a result of becoming a parent. While there are a lot of new friends in our life, we do hold a special place for the P family and of course the L family. Deb (L) and I worked together and probably wouldn't have chosen to be friends otherwise. We're very different but she and her family are a blessing nonetheless. At this difficult time of being unemployed I am thankful for my education that will take me on the next leg of the journey and for my colleagues who I've developed relationships with over the past 15 years. With some time on my hands, it's a perfect day to write what I DIDN'T do this past week. To begin with, I did NOT lose my job on Thursday because who would ever consider ridding themselves of me? Surprisingly, I am NOT terribly upset. On another note, I did NOT send my daughter to mom-mom's house on Saturday because she was asking to go (and whining) just to have some adult time. What kind of mother would I be to want an actual date? Of course when she asked to sleep over I did NOT object (evil grin) and mom-mom didn't either. * My position was eliminated or at least that's what they're telling me. ** I've felt terribly unchallenged for awhile, hence not being sad. It's a bad time to be out of work so while worried, I am not sad. *** All involved parties had a lovely weekend

Party Girl

Last night I caught Em in the corner of the living room singing and humming. When I asked what she was doing she said it was a "SUP-PIZE" She had her halloween party at daycare today and the kids put on a cute little show singing fall songs they had learned. Em had a little stage fright but I saw her mouthing ALL the words and doing the little hand gestures. She was adorable as were all her little friends. After an afternoon of fun she is all tuckered out.

It's been hectic over here the past week and I am suffering from mommy brain but that surely does not give me a license to be a bad mommy. NOPE, not me. I did NOT forget to buckle my little peanut properly into her carseat this week so she gave a little YAHOO while turning a corner. I'm a responsible parent who takes driving very seriously! (Em buckles herself in on top and I do the bottom. She actually was in on top but didn't have that extra and necessary additional security) I did NOT tell off some insane woman who was talking like a truck driver in the presence of small children. No, not me because I am a lady and never want my daughter to see me act like that.

Finally Some Fall Fun

We've had a chaotic few weeks with everyone being sick. Today despite colds we decided to just get out of the house and enjoy the 65 degree day. We went to a local halloween children's festival and had a great time with friends. You've never seen a girl wolf down lo-mein until you've dined with Emme. It is QUITE the sight. After dinner we just sat outside and enjoyed a beautiful sunset that went from hues of blues and pinks to bright orange. It was a great day.

Congrats to friends Andrea and Chris on the birth of your second child; a son. He is absolutely precious and I was thrilled when he was handed to me when I visited Andrea in the hospital. He had the most beautiful skin; not a mark on him. Andrea, Chris and Madison are yet another example of the gifts I've received through adoption. If I didn't have Emme, I wouldn't have met them. Our girls adore one another and spend each day together at daycare. You'll also find them chasing each other and having simultaneous meltdowns when it's time to leave gym class. I don't want to get a beating so no pics of the beautiful mama, just the babe.

This week I did NOT convince my daughter that the darkened sky from nasty weather was merely darkness in an attempt to get her to bed earlier so I could have a little time by myself. What kind of a mother tricks her kid? No, not me. Unfortunately it didn't work so the joke's on me. Like someone else you may know, I did not kill the inside of my brand spankin new oven by putting potato skins on the wrong baking pan and have them fly all over the place sans cheese. Oh no, not me. The Weekend Report

****** Update Several of you inquired as it does appear Emme may be left handed. She is L dominant but she uses both. We had a very low key weekend after running around way too much lately. Between moving and being sick we just needed some time hanging out at home. Friday night was a lot of fun and proved to be the best $10 I ever spent. We put together Em's new easel and she spent about 3 hours creating various masterpieces. Back in the day my nana painted in oils and acrylics. A few years ago she painted a portrait of me using my pre-school picture. She is going to come over once a week and give Em a painting "lesson". We have a little corner in our kitchen where it fits perfectly. Papa and Gigi came over for dinner and hung out with us and then Em, RaRa and I settled in for a fun night of pillow fights, Wonder Pets and cuddling. Today we laid around the house, watching movies with popcorn and wearing football regalia. Em took an afternoon nap while I successfully upgraded the memory in my computer. It took all of 5 minutes and now I'm flying just in time to start an online class tomorrow. Em perfected her "Naked Chinese Drum Dance" (video to follow). All in all a great weekend.

As for me, I did NOT send my daughter off to mom-mom's house for the afternoon on Saturday, secretly hoping she'd spend the night so I could get some much needed rest. What kind of a mother wants to get rid of their child? Certainly not me. I also did not go to the doctor for a complete physical, get results of slightly elevated cholesterol and celebrate with a delicious and most fattening cupcake. No, NOT ME, I take these issues seriously and to heart. Needless to say I did not go on an immediate diet nor walk a mile. Lastly, I did not have the aforementioned physician run one of THOSE tests because what kind of irresponsible woman would I be to let THAT happen? Needless to say the result came the next day in the need for a trip to the drugstore.

Like most of us who don't think it will ever happen, this family is not equipped to handle the extraordinary costs of a funeral. However this is Nate, their 4 year old who has every right to go peacefully and receive the same respect and dignity as anyone else without regard to financial hardship. Wedding Blues

No sadness, just her favorite color. At a wedding, they say the bride is the most beautiful and she was. However, the votes are in and Emme was voted the runner up. Not only her first wedding but she was the only child at this evening affair. Her behavior at both the church and reception were stellar. She had a wonderful time, hit the dance floor quite a few times and was a gracious guest. I'm so proud in so many ways. We wish A and S all the best as they begin their life together as husband and wife. A sneak peak of our day.

Photography and Me

Fairly recently I had a bad experience with a business that was weighing heavily on me but more so because it could have easily been fixed. I knew I wasn't getting anywhere and already out a lot of money. It turned me off to the art which I so want to learn. So I said, screw it, there are plenty of other PROfessionals more than willing to take me on and they have. I am current enrolled in a multi week course with a highly acclaimed photographer that was recommended to me. This week was our first class/lesson and I proud to report I fulfilled my requirement of learning different types of manual metering. Can't wait for tomorrow's lesson. I'll keep you posted but if anyone finds a lens baby, it's MINE

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

It's been a tough week for me emotionally. Those of you who read here are sure to know about the death of a beautiful little girl many of us came to know and adore through stories from her adoptive mother. Mom put up SOME fight to be able to bring this little girl home who was already a toddler. She also had a severe cleft lip and palette which was in desperate need of repair. There is a lot more to this story but this same beautiful child was murdered and the suspect just charged; that being her own mother. I have fought posting on this topic for so long because I want this to be a happy place where I can document our life together as a family. I may remove this at a later date in order to respect that some day this won't belong in my daughter's story. For now, it shall remain. My journey to adopt began in October 2005, shortly after the demise of a toxic relationship. I always knew I wanted to be a parent but was single and not in too many long-term relationships. My dreams started to become reality when I was accepted to my agency of choice to adopt a child from China. Why I chose China is of no relevance to this story so please, keep going. It was a long and arduous journey and although I yearned for it to happen, I also was grateful for this same wait which allowed me to grow by reading, watching and asking a lot of questions. I spoke to doctors and nurses and read clinical journals. I spoke to adult adoptees and heard their stories of having their names changed, having an American flag thrust into their hands and never to speak of their birth country again. Hearing these stories, makes me angry because it is my belief that EVERY adoptee has the right and deserves the respect of knowing their stories. In my case my child and I are not the same race so while we DO look alike in many ways, it is more obvious. Among the things I learned, the signs of Post-Adoption Depression (hereafter PAD) was really not discussed. It was only through speaking to my adoption coordinator (god bless you M.R) that this became knowledge. Meanwhile I am a licensed social worker and even throughout school had never heard the term. So when I experienced this incredibly painful ailment with the heart palpitations, watching the clock tick and wishing sleep upon us all, what did I do? I vacilated back and forth while in China if I were perhaps making a mistake. I had proverbial buyer's remorse. I wanted out but in my heart I knew I could not walk away. This was my daughter and for better or worse we were now a family. So forget her grief for a moment, what about mine? Where did these panic attacks come from which I had never in all my years ever experienced? Why was I afraid to be left alone with the child who kissed my nose and wanted to sleep with me? The answer is simple, I was suffering from PAD. In my case it lasted about three months. During those months I met with my primary care physician as well as my daughter's IA pediatrician and a course of treatment ensued. As a social worker trying to locate a therapist proved to be the most annoying task and in the end I relented and asked for a parenting coach/therapist through NYC Early Intervention. I ended up with a really nice male social worker who walked in and told me everything right I was doing. He noticed my growth as well as my daughter's on a weekly basis. He printed articles, he gave me homework and little by little I didn't need a pill to calm down. I no longer wished my daughter to sleep but instead wanted her awake to play with her. As a single parent going back to work sooner saved me and probably her too. She was used to being with children all day and I was used to being a career woman. A year later and I have managed to balance the best of both worlds. I couldn't love my daughter any more if I birthed her from my womb and while she wouldn't word that verbatim, she feels the same way about me. It's hard to believe I ever considered coming home "alone" or that there was something wrong with her. In essence there was something keeping me from realizing the gift I had been given but the grief that came with it. A year later we are mother and daughter in ever way and I would do anything for this child to show her how much she is loved. We make efforts to honor her birth culture and when she is a little older we will return to China so she may see where her life began and also to visit with special friends. I urge anyone reading this to please know you're not alone as you nod your head or you find yourself wiping a tear away. Through this journey I have met some of the most amazing women (and Jeff) who I am honored to call friends. There are supports out there and places to turn even in cyber-land if you need. There is the post adoption depression yahoo group for starters. It's not an easy read but some wonderfully strong women there telling their stories. Sometimes you have to endure the pain to reap the rewards of the pleasures of life. I was one of the lucky ones because I knew what it was and I RAN and didn't walk to my support network. Whether married or single, you must build those villages and build them strong. They need not be large but they most be strong enough to get you through the worst and to celebrate you with the best. Peace, Harmony and Justice for L.B and all those who have suffered unncessarily.

Don't worry, we didn't go too far. Okay we DID go to California but we've been back over a week. After a wonderful 12 day jaunt we came home to a double ear infection and the beginning of packing for our impending move. This was my first experience with her shop but I was beyond pleased with the quality of these for the price in addition to the packaging and delivery. I gifted myself our "forever" to honor our first year together as mother and daughter. I bought a second set of 4 which spell out "Papa" for my father from Emme.
